What you need to know about DNS

DNS (Domain Name System) is an essential system of Internet infrastructure that translates human-readable domain names (like www.example.com) into computer-understandable IP addresses (like 192.0.2.1). This conversion allows users to easily access websites and online services without having to memorize complex IP addresses. DNS functions as a decentralized global directory, organized in a hierarchy of servers. When a user enters a domain name in a browser, a DNS query is sent to look up the associated IP address. DNS servers resolve these queries by interrogating different levels, from root servers to authoritative name servers. DNS is also used for other network services, such as emails, through MX records, or to secure connections via DNSSEC records. It is a crucial component for Internet browsing, ensuring resource accessibility while maintaining high performance and reliable domain name management.
