This is a unique opportunity to join the Government Digital Service (GDS) and work on , the UK’s central hub for open data. You’ll play a key role in transforming how data is shared, accessed and understood, helping improve transparency, innovation and public services across the UK.

At GDS, your work has real impact. You’ll collaborate with some of the most skilled digital professionals in government, solving complex challenges and delivering meaningful change at a national scale.

About the role

As a Content Designer for , you’ll shape how users find, understand and interact with public sector data. This is a hands-on, user-centred role where you’ll design and deliver clear, accessible content that supports a wide range of users, from policymakers to developers to the general public.

You’ll be part of an agile, multidisciplinary team working to modernise into a more reliable, accessible and user-focused platform. Using research, insights and continuous feedback, you’ll help ensure content meets user needs while supporting wider government priorities around transparency, data reuse and innovation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Design and deliver user-centred content that is clear, accessible and easy to understand

  • Use data, analytics and user research to inform content decisions and improvements

  • Work across the full delivery lifecycle, from discovery through to live service and iteration

  • Collaborate closely with user researchers, designers, developers and product managers

  • Support end-to-end user journeys, ensuring content aligns with service outcomes

  • Create and manage content artefacts such as user stories, content plans and prototypes

  • Ensure content meets  standards, accessibility requirements and quality expectations

  • Work with policy, legal and delivery stakeholders to balance user needs and requirements

  • Contribute to the wider content design community across GDS and government

Candidate profile

What we’re looking for

Strong experience in:

  • Writing, editing and publishing digital content in a user-centred way

  • Using content management systems and structured publishing processes

  • Using analytics, user research and feedback to continuously improve content

Experience of:

  • Working in agile environments, managing multiple priorities and adapting to change

  • Collaborating with stakeholders and tailoring communication to different audiences

  • Explaining decisions clearly using evidence and user insight

Working environment

Location: Bristol or Manchester
