Job description As a software developer in the Defence Business Services (DBS) Automation Garage you will be responsible for developing and maintaining live public-facing services on . In this role, you will write clean, secure, and test-driven code that adheres to modern standards and design patterns. You will create open solutions that are easy for others to reuse and extend. You will integrate APIs such as One Login and Notify ensuring services align with the Government Digital Service Standard. You will test and document code releases and support the team at GDS Service Assessments. Work with JavaScript, TypeScript, TypeORM, Postgres, Nunjucks. Develop backend services using Node.js with frameworks like Express and NestJS. Maintain and support open GitHub repositories, following robust branching and commit strategies to ensure clarity and traceability. Support DevOps activities in a Kubernetes environment on OpenShift, leveraging Docker for containerisation. Support live services by investigating incidents and resolving issues to minimise downtime. You can design, code, test, and document using modern standards and tools, working closely with users and stakeholders to gather requirements. Collaborate with others (service manager, technical architects, design team) to understand and review software requirements. Work in an Agile environment ensuring service and project managers are informed of the status of development and service support. Within DBS, the Digital, Information & Technology (DIT) team is responsible for management, support and delivery of the DBS information technology systems and the provision of accurate and timely management information to our customers. Within DIT this role supports thousands of users across defence and a significant number of key defence activities utilising Oracle EBusiness Suite for our Finance and Commercial activities and Remedy for DBS’ core change, case and incident management. As a Software Developer you will be responsible for, but not limited to: Supporting live services, actioning all relevant and ever-greening activities and implementing all associated change. You will be required to support live systems (incident management and resolution), delivery of minor change (Urgent fix, business or Oracle driven) and support projects across a single service line. You will be required to manage user relationships, work independently (limited Senior Developer support available) to investigate and resolve issues/concerns escalating where necessary, providing timely system related advice. Develop software to meet user needs, unit test and following best practice release management protocols. Assist with the creation of system designs using the appropriate standards, tools and methods. This role will report to the Business Intelligence Lead. You will be expected to work independently but also flexibly as part of a team. To enhance data driven decision making you will assist in the build and implementation of products that transform the way we manage and interact with data, creating innovative solutions that ultimately provide an intuitive experience for a wide array of users primarily within Finance, HR and Commercial. These products will be held within the Corporate BI Platform, comprising two components: a data warehouse and reporting/dashboarding tools. The initial focus of the BI platform has been the core Finance and HR reporting and data processes, but we plan to expand the platform to bring in a range of other non-corporate data sources as well. As the Junior Business Intelligence Developer your key responsibilities will be Technically facilitate the expansion of the BI platform data warehouse, through developing data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) pipelines. Collaborate with teams across DCMS to assist the BI team in understanding reporting requirements. Assist the BI team with the creation of self service, user intuitive reports within a business analytics reporting tool (currently Looker Studio). Assist in the transition from a Google-based environment to Microsoft 365 by adapting and replicating existing processes to ensure seamless functionality within the new platform.
