As a Software Developer in Data Services, you’ll be engineering solutions using Python, Java and AWS Cloud Computing to bridge the gap between advanced scientific modelling and the platforms our users rely on every day. You’ll be getting hands on with the output of our cutting-edge supercomputing capabilities, handling terabytes of data daily, and making system performance, scalability, and reliability essential elements of your work.

Candidate profile

Essential Skills & Abilities

  1. Systems Design. Translate logical designs into physical designs. Produce detailed designs. Effectively document all work using required standards, methods and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate. Design systems characterised by managed levels of risk, manageable business and technical complexity, and meaningful impact. Work with well understood technology and identify appropriate patterns. 

  2. Development process optimisation: explain the importance of developing process efficiency and the common ways in which processes are optimised. Support specific activities to improve development processes. Spot or identify obvious deficiencies. 

  3. Programming and build (software engineering): collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications, use the agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools. 

  4. Service support. Help fix faults following agreed procedures. Carry out agreed maintenance tasks on infrastructure.

  5. Systems integration. Build and test simple interfaces between systems. Work on more complex integration as part of a wider team

As our Software Developer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work. 

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 33 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share.  Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.
