To become a Project Manager, it is recommended you gain a relevant degree, although it’s not essential, it will help you launch your career. There are a number of project manager courses you can take to become a certified Project Manager. Here are some of the courses that a Project Manager should take to secure the best roles:

Project Management Professional (PMP)®

Offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), PMP certification is one of the most recognised credentials for Project Managers. It covers a broad range of project management concepts, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, and closing.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®

Also provided by PMI, the CAPM certification is designed for individuals with limited project management experience. It focuses on the fundamental principles, terminology, and processes of project management. CAPM certification serves as a stepping stone towards achieving the PMP certification.

Prince2® Foundation

‘PRojects IN Controlled Environments 2’ is a process-based project management methodology widely used in the United Kingdom and globally. PRINCE2 certification provides a structured approach to managing projects, emphasising clear roles, responsibilities, and deliverables at each stage of the project lifecycle. This certification is aimed at current and aspiring project managers or professionals who manage projects.

PRINCE2® Practitioner

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is suitable for anyone managing projects. This could be as part of a formal project management function or a role which involves project management as part of day-to-day work. The Practitioner certification aims to verify that you have sufficient knowledge and understanding to apply and tailor the method in a range of different project environments and scenarios.

CompTIA Project +

CompTIA Project+ is ideal for professionals handling less difficult projects while also overseeing the project life cycle, making sure proper communication is made, controlling resources, and keeping project documentation up to date. It covers the frameworks, techniques, and Agile skills required to successfully manage and deliver IT projects while taking into account issues like compliance and change management.

Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)

The PMI-ACP certification is geared towards Project Managers who work in Agile environments. It covers various Agile methodologies, including Scrum, Kanban, Lean, and XP. This certification demonstrates a Project Manager's ability to adapt and lead projects using Agile practices.

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)

Scrum is an agile framework for managing complex projects. The CSM certification is designed for individuals involved in Scrum projects and focuses on Scrum principles, practices, and roles. It equips professionals with the knowledge to facilitate the Scrum process effectively.

Six Sigma

While not exclusively a project management course, Six Sigma focuses on process improvement and reducing defects or errors in project deliverables. It utilises statistical analysis and data-driven approaches to achieve project objectives. Six Sigma Green Belt and Six Sigma Black Belt certifications are commonly sought by Project Managers.

Industry-Specific Project Management Courses

Many training providers offer industry-specific project management courses tailored to sectors such as IT, construction, healthcare, finance, and more. These courses address the unique challenges and requirements of specific industries, equipping Project Managers with specialised skills and knowledge.

Here are some other qualifications which may be beneficial:

  • ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) 4 Foundation
  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional (ITIL MP)
  •  APM PQ (Association for Project Management Practitioner Qualification)

It is essential to research and choose project management courses based on your experience level, career goals, and industry requirements. Certification courses often require meeting specific eligibility criteria and passing an exam, while non-certification courses focus on imparting practical skills and knowledge without formal certification.
