What 5 Tech Skills will Dominate the Second Half of 2026?

With a dual sense of déjà vu, a tech hiring veteran braces Free-Work users for a potential stand-off, because employers just aren’t computing how scarce Generative AI/ Machine Learning and four other ‘hot’ IT specialisms are set to be for the rest of 2026.
Every six months, I find myself having the same conversation with clients! And that conversation is centred around a two-fold question:
What tech skills do UK employers like them actually need, and how much is the labour market charging for these tech skillsets?
Put another way:
As of June 2026, what is the picture for the UK tech skills market?

In the second half of 2026 (H2 2026), the tech skills picture is clearer than it has been for a while.
But in a potential sign of a stand-off to come, it’s also more expensive than most employers’ hiring managers are budgeting for.
There’s an additional familiar backdrop, writes Primis Talent founder Ben Broughton, who has 25 years’ professional experience in tech/IT recruitment.
Before I come to this second déjà vu, here and exclusively for Free-Work, these are this article’s:
Key Takeaways:
Five tech skills are breaking away from the bunch, as their low availability is exerting upward pressure on appetite and pay, which are set to stay at high levels until 2027
Generative AI /Machine Learning is the UK’s ‘hottest’ tech skill, but contracts of up to £1,000 a day are reserved for those who have a rare combination of capabilities
Fearing attacks or to protect their Cloud investments, companies are being actively advised to hire BOTH cybersecurity contractors and staff (London CISO = £160k)
With more than 9/10 outfits now in the Cloud, Cloud Architecture is sitting pretty, with certifications able to return £850 a day, or £130k a year on a full-time basis
DevOps and Data Engineering dominate permanent tech fields, driven by strategic dependency and the need to translate raw data into business outcomes, respectively.
Britain’s tech skills shortage. Here’s where it comes in…
Let’s return to the second thing that makes me feel stuck in a loop, which I cued up above.
It’s the UK tech skills shortage.
While it’s clearly not a new story, a key chapter is being written in 2026.
In particular, the stubborn supply-demand deficit is helping five tech skills pull away from the pack— in terms of appetite, scarcity, and how much in rates and salaries they can fetch.
Three of these five tech skills that will dominate H2 2026 are best accessed through contractors and temporary workers. Two of the five are worth employers taking on a permanent basis.
Let’s get to it — the five most likely to dominate tech skills of H2 2026, what they pay, and why they will stay ‘hot’ until 2027:
1. Generative AI & Machine Learning (Contract)

Hot Roles*:
AI/ML Engineer
MLOps Engineer
AI Governance Consultant
Contract day rate: £700 – £1,000+/day
Specific skills: Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, Vector Databases, Generative AI / LLMs, MLOps, AI Governance & Compliance.
Generative AI / Machine Learning is the most in-demand skill in the UK tech market right now. And the pay rates reflect this fact.
Senior AI/ML engineers in London are routinely achieving £700–£900 per day, with niche generative AI specialists exceeding £1,000 per day in competitive engagements.*
Why is Generative AI / Machine Learning a contractor skill?
Because most businesses do not yet have a permanent AI function, they merely have a project. So there’s a defined scope: build the pipeline, train the model, get the system into production.
What’s driving demand for Generative AI / Machine Learning as a skill?
Demand for Generative AI / Machine Learning skills is structural, driven by rapid enterprise AI adoption and the regulatory scrutiny arriving via the EU AI Act.
This Artificial Intelligence-focused framework is creating a secondary wave of demand for AI governance and compliance expertise, on top of core engineering.
Is there a good supply of contractors skilled in Generative AI / Machine Learning?
Supply remains extremely tight. Genuine AI and ML capability requires academic depth, hands-on tooling experience, and the commercial awareness to translate model outputs into business decisions. That combination is rare.
Therefore, day rates for Generative AI / Machine Learning are not coming down in H2 2026.

2. Cybersecurity
Hot Roles*:
Penetration Tester
Security Architect
Cloud Security Engineer
CISO (Chief Information Security Officer)
Contract day rate: £600 – £850/day | Full-time annual Salary: £60,000 – £120,000
Specific skills: Penetration Testing (CREST/CHECK), Security Architecture, Cloud Security (AWS/Azure), Incident Response, CISSP, CEH, SC-200, Threat Intelligence.
Cybersecurity, as a skillset, increased by 20% in demand between October and December 2025, according to Adzuna data covering over 11,000 unique UK job postings.
And that growth has not slowed.
The drivers are structural. Global cyberattacks continue to escalate, and every organisation that has shifted workloads to the cloud has expanded its attack surface in the process.
How much do cybersecurity contractor jobs pay?
On the contract side, mid-senior Penetration Testers are achieving £450–£650/day, while Security Architects (Inside IR35) are typically hitting £550–£800/day. Outside IR35 project engagements push higher still.
Permanent Security Architects and Cloud Security Leads sit at £80,000–£120,000, with CISO-level roles at large UK organisations reaching £150,000–£160,000.*
Are both contract and full-time IT security staff in demand?
Cybersecurity is one of the few skills where I actively advise clients to consider both contract and permanent hiring routes(depending on the brief).
Short-term Penetration Testing or Incident Response is natural contractor territory.
But an Embedded Security capability — someone who owns your policies, your compliance posture, your team culture around security — needs to be permanent.
The cost of getting this wrong is measured in system breach costs, not recruitment fees!

3. Cloud Architecture (AWS / Azure / GCP)
Hot Roles*:
Cloud Architect
Cloud Solutions Architect
Platform Architect
Contract day rate: £650 – £850/day | Full-time Salary (London): £95,000 – £130,000
Specific skills: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Terraform, Cloud-Native Architecture, Multi-Cloud Design, AWS Solutions Architect / AZ-104 / GCP Professional Certifications.
How key is Cloud Architecture?
Cloud Architecture is the skill underpinning the UK's biggest and most sustained technology investment.
Cloud adoption has reached 94% among enterprises globally, and the UK market — particularly financial services and public sector — continues to run large-scale migration and modernisation programmes that require this skill at a senior level.
How much do Cloud Architects earn?
Technologists who possess this skill at architect-grade are routinely clearing £120,000 in competitive permanent markets, with the contract equivalent at £650–£850/day.*
Cloud Architecture is a ‘contractor-first’ skill because the sharpest demand is project-based. Typically, that involves a migration from on-premise to AWS, a multi-cloud design, or/and a platform modernisation ahead of a product launch.
Why else is Cloud a contractor-first skill?
Once the architecture is defined and the build is underway, the specialist moves on.
The cloud engineer who then maintains and optimises that environment is a different skill level and a different price point.
Certifications matter here more than almost anywhere else in this tech skills top 5 for H2 2026. AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator (AZ-104), and Google Cloud Professional credentials appear in the majority of senior cloud briefs that our tech staffing agency receives.
Contractors who want to optimise earnings should not shun Cloud training. We’re seeing certified Cloud architects command 10–15% above their non-certified peers at equivalent experience levels.

4. DevOps & Infrastructure Automation (Permanent)

Hot Roles*:
DevOps Engineer
Platform Engineer
Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)
Full-time annual Salary: £55,000 – £95,000 | London: £65,000 – £140,000
Specific skills: CI/CD Pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), AWS/Azure, Python/Bash/Go.
DevOps and Infrastructure Automation is my first ‘permanent job candidate’ pick in this rundown of 5 domineering tech skills for H2 2026, exclusively for Free-Work.
And the reason is strategic dependency.
Why is DevOps /Infrastructure Automation suited to full-time applicants?
The skill of DevOps /Infrastructure Automation, when embedded in an engineering team, directly changes the pace at which that team ships product. It owns the CI/CD Pipeline, the Infrastructure as Code, and the deployment reliability. Crucially, such knowledge is cumulative; the longer it sits in one person inside the business, the more valuable it becomes.
By contrast, we believe that cycling contractors through the skillset of DevOps / Infrastructure Automation is a false economy.
How much do DevOps Engineers earn?
The salary consensus for DevOps Engineers sits at £53,000–£66,000, rising to £65,000–£80,000 in London. Senior roles and those with deep Cloud-platform specialisms (Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS/Azure) push above £95,000 in competitive markets.
According to Robert Half's 2026 guide, London DevOps Engineers are benchmarked at £79,250–£113,250, albeit with the latter three-figure salary being reserved for the upper end of the market.*
Who are the most sought-after in DevOps/Infrastructure Automation in HS 2026?
Between now and the end of 2026, employers are set to consistently prioritise automation tooling (Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform), containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and Cloud platform depth.
Sought-after DevOps/Infrastructure Automation candidates are those who combine all three (automation, containerisation and Cloud platform depth), and can demonstrate measurable delivery impact. And those shortlisted DevOps /Infrastructure Automation applicants who can evidence faster deployment cycles, improved uptime, and/or reduced incident frequency, are in a genuinely strong negotiating position.

5. Data Engineering & Pipeline Architecture (Permanent)

Hot Roles*:
Data Engineer
Data Platform Engineer
Analytics Engineer
Full-time annual Salary: £55,000 – £90,000 | Senior / London: £90,000 – £120,000+
Specific skills: Apache Spark, dbt, Snowflake, Databricks, SQL, Python, Real-Time Streaming (Kafka), Data Pipeline Architecture, ML Feature Engineering.
Data Engineering is my second ‘permanent IT job applicant pick’ for H2 2026, but it comes with a caveat:
The UK tech labour market is now catching up to what Data Engineering is actually worth faster than most salary bands reflect.
Why are Data Engineers better off targeting full-time applications?
The reason that Data Engineering /Pipeline Architecture needs to sit permanently in a business is the same as DevOps — institutional knowledge.
A tech professional with deep data engineering skill who understands the organisation’s sources, pipeline architecture, quality issues, and their downstream consumers is an asset that compounds over time.
Data Engineering is in high demand in 2026 because of the need to translate raw data into business outcomes.
Therefore, senior practitioners of Data Engineering in data-driven organisations are regularly clearing £90,000–£120,000.
Remember the second loop I was stuck in; the tech skills shortage? Well, the UK's digital talent gap costs an estimated £63 billion annually, and Data Engineering sits squarely in the middle of that shortage.*
What’s new in Data Engineering in 2026?
What has shifted for H2 2026 is the definition of ‘Date Engineering’ itself.
Pure pipeline work, moving data from A to B, is increasingly commoditised. The practitioners of Data Engineering commanding top-of-market remuneration (including contractor day rates) are those who combine pipeline engineering with ML-adjacent capability— Feature Engineering for AI models, Real-Time Streaming Architectures, and Data Platform ownership at scale.
Spark, dbt, Snowflake, and Databricks are the differentiators in most senior briefs that I see.

The takeaway
The common thread across all five of the tech skills set to dominate between June 2026 and 2027 is scarcity.
None of these five domineering tech roles is one where the employer posts a job advert and has to wait.
The candidates who genuinely have these skills know their market value — and in H2 2026, that value is high and well-supported by data.
For contractors: the market is recovering, rates for specialist skills are firm, and the businesses moving fastest are the ones with clean IR35 processes and the ability to make decisions quickly.
As of June 2026, we’re seeing any hesitation from the client at the offer stage, resulting in the candidate starting elsewhere.
For permanent and full-time techies, the salary expectation gap is real.
So as the second half of 2026 dawns, we’re seeing the salary figure in the employer’s ‘approved band’ and the number that a strong candidate will accept, often not being the same.
Tech employers consistently securing the hires that they want, at the remuneration they want, are the ones having that conversation at the brief stage — not the offer stage.
Final Thought on 5 tech skills set to dominate H2 2026
The UK tech talent market in H2 2026 rewards speed, specificity, and honesty about what ‘good’ actually costs. Employers, recruiters, hiring managers, and even some candidates would do well to remember that, because it’s a sentiment we can’t see fading very much in 2027.
