What is the best CV structure in 2026 for IT job-seekers?

Technology professionals spend a lot of time thinking about the content of their CVs. But structure, layout and clarity are just as important. In 2026, your CV needs to work for both hiring managers and automated systems, without losing authenticity.

A CV’s Profile, its Work History and even its Key Skills section.

I’ve now covered all of those key aspects on a CV for technology jobs, exclusively for Free-Work.

But sorry, IT job board users, because there’s even more to consider with your CV in 2026!

How important is layout on a tech CV?

In fact, Artificial Intelligence (AI),  keyword-scanning Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) and how the whole CV holds together - its layout - are arguably just as important considerations to ensure your CV succeeds in the IT job application stakes.

Should techies fix the order of their CV headings first?

But before you even get to worry about keywords, AI tools or ATS systems, start with structure, writes Kick-Ass CV Coach & LinkedIn expert Rebecca Pay, a professional reviewer of countless CVs and résumés for leaders in the IT industry and other key sectors.

What does a poor CV structure communicate?

If your CV jumps around or buries important sections, even the best experience in IT or the most impressive technical skills can be missed.

A thoughtless structure on a CV might also suggest to some hiring decision-makers that you’re a bit erratic, yourself!

What is the best CV layout for tech job-seekers?

A simple, effective CV structure for a techie often looks like this:

  • Headline

  • Profile/Summary

  • Key Skills

  • Career Highlights (if relevant)

  • Career History

  • Education/Qualifications/Training

  • Tech Skills/Tools/Frameworks

  • Professional memberships and/or Volunteer Work

  • Interests - if they are interesting!

What else is essential with CV headings?

Having clear headings that are also brief or short is essential.

It’s this concise labelling, underpinned by logical structure, that helps guide hiring managers to the sections that they want to look at first.

You don’t want to frustrate them!

On the contrary, you want them to like you.

What’s the best font size on a CV?

Therefore, use a font size that is easy to read, no smaller than 10 and usually, in my experience as a CV rewriter, size 12 is optimal.

Stick to a clean, modern font.

I favour Calibri.

And having clear margins and white space is crucial.

How to write an ATS-friendly tech CV in 2026

I’m often asked with ATS - Applicant Tracking System - what actually matters, to make your CV ATS-friendly.

Well, ATS is not an anti-CV monster that’s simply out to get you!

Indeed, in 2026, most tech CVs will pass ATS if they are written clearly.

ATS-Friendly CV tips

Nonetheless, here are some ATS-Friendly CV tips as a techie.

  • Keep your CV to one column

  • Remove (or don’t insert) any images, graphics, or text boxes

  • Keep a clear and simple CV format to avoid ATS having a tantrum.

What are some top ATS considerations when writing a tech CV?

When inputting sentences into your CV’s key sections, keep in mind that you need to write the document for both a human and a machine.

The trick is not to lean too far in one direction.

It is not about gaming the system but understanding it and using it to your advantage.

Keywords and ATS: use them naturally on your CV, not strategically…

Keywords are often how ‘employers’ (perm) or ‘clients’ (contract) seeking IT expertise sort the ‘wheat from the chaff.’

To ensure you are not ‘chaff-worthy,’ mirror the language in the job description or contract brief/spec.

Yes, that does mean adapting your CV for every application!

But no, it does not mean rewriting your CV entirely each time.

What should my CV reflect and not reflect?

Just make sure the contents of your résumé reflect the truth about your technology career and your real IT industry experience (which, if questioned about at an interview, you can answer automatically and with ease).

Tailoring your CV to every individual tech job application that you make can feel challenging.

But don’t be tempted to fib or cut and paste big chunks over from last week’s application. Likewise, you don’t want your CV to be a mirror image of your LinkedIn profile, reflecting back at you and the hirer!

Should I optimise my CV with ATS keywords?

Similarly, avoid keyword stuffing just to please ATS.

Dumping long lists of tools somewhere on your CV won’t go in your favour, either.

Once you’re happy, stand back from your CV and double-check that the document looks clear, easy to follow, and easy on the eye.

What is the CV readability test?

Even if the layout, structure and white spaces on your CV all pass muster, how about the ‘Readability Test’?

You pass this test when, at the end of your edits, your CV still reads like a single, cohesive, concise and eloquent document - a CV -  that represents YOU.

Make sure you run the readability test before hitting “Send.”

AI can HELP with your CV - but it cannot write it

A lot of people say I will be out of a job soon, as why would you pay for a professional (human!) CV writer like me, when AI can do it for them, and very fast?!

I actually believe most people can write a decent CV on their own, with the right tools and advice.

That’s partly why I’ve collaborated with Free-Work on this CV article series!

But in our time-poor age, some technologists don’t have the hours in the day, or the patience for writing their own CV.

What does a professional CV rewriter make of AI?

AI can be utilised as a great tool, but relying on it for ALL the wording in your CV is a dangerous game.

It’s becoming widely acknowledged that ‘AI writing’ can now be spotted a mile off, unless you are curating it very, very carefully — and by that stage, you might as well write it yourself!

Where is AI usage valid on a CV?

Using AI and large language models to proofread your CV, suggest ‘missing sections,’ shorten long paragraphs, or generate ideas for CV structure, are all valid uses.

But that’s where I’d draw the line with AI and CVs, assuming you don’t want a hirer to ask why you’ve got a near identical CV to the previous applicant!

In addition, with your CV, asking AI to write the whole thing for you will not only lack credibility, but it’ll also make it sound very generic.

The best CVs always come from real achievements and have an authentic voice.

The takeaway

Your CV should be that ‘foot in the door’ to an IT job interview, so make it easy for hiring managers or recruitment agents in 2026 to choose you!

Layout and structure are central to that process.

Keep in mind, most hiring decision-makers want to make quick decisions. They typically don’t have time to go on a ‘treasure hunt’ to find out if you have the tech stack they need or the communication skills they are looking for.

Ensure the IT skills required are front and centre, in a clear, concisely labelled section.

Keep it clear, well-structured and credible. And remember, AI and ATS may be part of the process, but a CV’s clarity and impact still win interviews.
