At the Driver and Vehicle licensing Agency (DVLA) we take testing very seriously. Our Test Engineers are working to analyse and assure the quality of our software so that we can build products quickly and safely. You will be a critical part of a software development squad and follow scrum principles. You will have a curious and investigative mind and will challenge us to improve our methods and scope of testing.

You will be manually testing services and be familiar with some automation tooling to help you. You will enjoy exploratory testing and surfacing unrealised acceptance criteria.

Our services tend to be web-based or API-based. You will be familiar with testing web-based interfaces and the in-browser tools to aid you. You will be comfortable with HTTP API testing tools such as Postman. You will relish testing complex products with complex business rules.

Test Engineers are responsible for maintaining and supporting a high-quality testing service. They are responsible for planning, designing, and carrying out all aspects of testing. Including, but not limited to the following:

  • Clarifying stories and acceptance criteria with analysts and developers to ensure business scenarios are fully covered.

  • Determining the testing that is needed by working with developers to ensure the code base and test requirements are understood.

  • Identifying areas needing testing include both functional and non-functional requirements.

  • Working with junior test engineers to develop their testing skills and knowledge.

Candidate profile

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  1. You will be comfortable reading and writing stories in the Gherkin specification language.

  2. You will have real experience of using test tooling to assist you in testing both web-based user interfaces and APIs. You will proactively look to implement Continuous Testing principles to speed up the feedback cycle for all elements of quality, such as security and accessibility.

  3. You will have experience as a Test Analyst or Test Engineer and able to work across multiple delivery squads and be able to have difficult conversations when your testing has identified defects. You will actively seek and consider input of people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and collaborate wit

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week. Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
