Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a remote position.

Candidate profile

In this role, you will design, develop and enhance secure, high-performing backend applications that support the continued digital transformation of our client’s services. Working within a modern cloud environment, you'll collaborate with architects, engineers, business stakeholders and client teams to deliver resilient solutions that improve critical public services. You'll have the opportunity to influence technical direction, share your expertise across the team and contribute to engineering excellence through modern development practices.

You'll work as part of an Agile delivery team, taking ownership of technical challenges from design through to deployment and operational support. Alongside developing scalable Java-based services, you'll help drive continuous improvement across delivery processes, support production environments, and mentor colleagues to promote high-quality engineering standards and collaborative ways of working.

Key responsibilities

• Design & Develop secure, scalable backend applications using Java and modern frameworks.

• Architect & Deliver cloud-native solutions that meet business and user needs.

• Lead & Influence technical design discussions and contribute to architectural decisions.

• Collaborate & Support Agile delivery teams through sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives.

• Build & Integrate large-scale application components across complex technology environments.

• Automate & Improve deployment pipelines using CI/CD best practices and Infrastructure as Code.

• Monitor & Resolve production incidents, ensuring system reliability and operational excellence.

• Mentor & Share knowledge, supporting the growth and development of fellow engineers.

• Champion & Enhance engineering standards, continuous improvement and DevOps practices.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role

To succeed in this role, you'll be an experienced software developer with strong backend Java expertise and a passion for building secure, scalable applications within cloud environments. You'll combine excellent technical knowledge with strong communication skills, enabling you to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams while taking ownership of complex technical challenges. Experience working in Agile environments and delivering high-quality software for enterprise-scale systems will be key to your success.

Essential qualifications

• Strong commercial experience developing applications using Java, Spring Boot and Hibernate.

• Experience integrating with Identity and Access Management (IDAM) platforms such as ForgeRock, One Identity, Okta, Azure AD or Auth0.

• Proven experience with Jenkins and CI/CD pipelines.

• Experience reverse engineering existing applications and supporting legacy integrations.

• Strong understanding of Git version control and collaborative development practices.

• Experience working independently while contributing effectively within Agile delivery teams.

• Proficiency using Jira and Confluence to manage work and technical documentation.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable qualifications

• Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services.

• Knowledge of Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.

• Experience using Ansible for automation.

• Familiarity with DevOps practices, monitoring and observability tooling.

• Front-end development experience.

• Experience working within large-scale public sector or highly regulated environments.
