Hi, thanks for your advice... in terms of creating cms can you point me the right direction for learning how to start developing these systems? Would it be php/asp? I have a lot of experience working with CMS but just from the content editing side, no programmer experience. Can you recommend any books/websites? I pick things up relatively easily... so would like to give it a try.
With regards to my original query I did quote an hourly rate and we have been working together on it. Moving forward the hourly/monthly rate is definitely where i want to go. Think it would add another string to my bow tho to be able to offer cms design. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I recently designed a website for a very small business and no they want more updates and have asked that I train them how to update the site themselves and they will pay me a fee for "training them"... firstly is this something you would recommend i do? afterall if they don't know what they're doing and my portfolio points to the site it could be bad news for me. Also how would I advise they update the site themselves without investing in software such as dreamweaver?? Word perhaps? any advice would be appreciated 🙂
I'm a huge InDesign fan too, I hate the fact that Quark is so behind the times compared to InDesign... a couple of weeks ago I had a text box with rounded corners and Quark couldn't align the text vertically!!! I had to layer a square box over the top to create the effect I needed, irritating instances like this seem to happen all of the time in Quark whereas InDesign has a simple solution every time... plus it has the added bonus of being so compatible with photoshop and illustrator!
Hi, I have been asked to do some invitations for an engagement party, and when going through concepts with the client they have decided to have a square design 150x150mm... obviously for this kind of job a large commerical printer would charge a lot for a low run (they want 130) and I wondered if anyone has had any experience with this and could recommend a printer/service i could use?
I think I blew it in a job interview yesterday and now wonder if I'm heading off down a wrong career path. I originally set out working in-house for a business who specialised in training. I had experience at video editing using an avid, DVD authoring (encore), CD-ROM Presentations (Flash), Print design for adverts, packaging, marketing material etc. and also creating the corporate website. I then moved onto a job working again in-house but within a marketing department, therefore getting marketing experience, such as web marketing strategies, seo, creating creative proposals etc. and as the company i currently work for is blue chip the standard of my design work has greatly improved.
I'm now thinking of my next move and i'm a little stuck. I went for an interview yesterday which was for a Web Developer - my cv seemed to match up perfectly as it was more about developing the website from a marketing perspective rather than an actual coding developer. However when I got to the interview they asked about my experience with e-commerce sites, I explained that I work within a team who look after our b2b site and I had to admit that I had never worked on a project without developer help. So cutting to the point, i'm wondering if how I am working at the moment (Designer&Developer(coder) Partnership) is not standard within the industry? You know am I becoming Jack of all Trades Master of non... would someone out there - will the majority of ppl out there have PHP coding within there skillset and Marketing, Graphic Design & Web? Or do I need to choose between print and the web?? Design & Development??

I've got a meeting tomorrow night with a potential client in an attempt to secure a job with them. I just wondered if anyone has any tips, do's and don'ts etc.
My plan is to go with a presentation detailing my experience and portfolio and a questinnarie on what the client is looking for, thus gathering as much info as possible for me to then give a quote. I haven't done this before so any advice would be great!
I seem to get a lot of my ideas when i'm doing daily tasks such as showering or washing up (usually when grabbing a pen and my notebook is difficult) or when i'm running and my mind is completely free. Night times are better for me too (it usually takes me till noon to wake up!!). I also love flicking through magazines and I have a few "coffee table" books such as The Art of Looking Sideways which I browse through and usually an idea pops out.
I'm just wondering where you all get your inspiration/ideas from? What do you do in the instances of "designers/writers block"?
I've just started to do freelance work and i'm trying to do "deals" to generate business, so for instance I have agreed to do a Logo design, business cards and website (with just one page) for £150. Do you think this is okay? I have alot of experience but just working as an in-house designer so I don't have anything i can actually add to my own portfolio site as the company I work for hasn't given me permission...
