Good work. I'd say the second works the best, as those cubes definately need the contrast with the background. Also, the colours are maybe a bit bland - i'd probably try some big colours on a dark background..
I'm pretty much in the same boat... It seems to be pretty tough getting work at the mo (and getting paid). Have you tried contacting web design companies? I've had a bit of luck with them, as alot of web designers seem to like having a graphic designer to work with. Peaches and cream and all that..
